ARTIST OF THE YEAR 2013 – Mr Ang Hoon Seng
Mr Ang Hoon Seng, descended from Chaozhou in Guangdong
Province was born in Singapore in June 1933. He was in the public and banking
services for more than four decades holding the position as vice-president of
Overseas Union Bank Ltd, Singapore and its chief representative in Beijing,
Shenzhen and Chengdu. He has served as a member of the Committee of Management
of The Ngee Ann Kongsi since 1981, council member of the Teochew Federation
(Singapore) and governor of the Teochew Foundation as well as advisor to Ngee
Ann Cultural Centre and a number of local and overseas arts bodies.
Actively involved in the promotion of Chinese culture for
decades, Mr Ang was the vice president of the Singapore China Society, honorary
president of Teochew Drama Association, a director of the Singapore Teochew
Poit Ip Huay Kuan and chairman of the Huay Kuan’s cultural & educational
committee.
Notwithstanding his English education background, Mr Ang has
been an enthusiast of all things related to Chinese culture, especially the
highly sophisticated and refined art of Chinese calligraphy and painting. He
started practising calligraphy by learning from a wide range of most famous
works from the great ancient masters. They include kǎi shū (楷书) or
regular script from Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhen Qing, Liu Gong Quan and Zhong Yao; xíng shū (行书) or
running script from Wang Xi Zhi, Zhao Meng Fu, Chu Sui Liang; cǎo-shū (草书) or
cursive script from Dong Qi Chang, Zhi Yong and Mi Fu; and kuáng-cǎo (狂草) or
wild-cursive script from Huai Su, Zhang Xu and Zhang Zhi as well as the twenty
famous inscriptions from Longmen Grottoes.
In recent years, he has devoted much time in studying the
one-stroke writing, (一笔书yì bǐ shū) innovated by Zhang Zhi. While emulating the great
masters, Mr Ang has developed his own styles of writing. His kǎi shū (楷书) or
regular script, in mini or medium size scripts, is elegant and well composed
without any touch-up whatsoever. However, he is better known for his
accomplishment in cǎo-shū (草书), in terms of the density, layout and flow of the
characters. His style is vigor, fast, graceful and natural. He has devoted much
time recently in improving his skills in Chinese brush painting and wood
carving, thus keeping himself meaningfully occupied every day.
