He started practising calligraphy by learning from a wide range of most famous works from the great ancient masters. They include kǎi shū (楷书) or regular script from Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhen Qing, Liu Gong Quan and Zhong Yao; xíng shū (行书) or running script from Wang Xi Zhi, Zhao Meng Fu, Chu Sui Liang; cǎo-shū (草书) or cursive script from Dong Qi Chang, Zhi Yong and Mi Fu; and kuáng-cǎo (狂草) or wild-cursive script from Huai Su, Zhang Xu and Zhang Zhi as well as the twenty famous inscriptions from Longmen Grottoes.

In recent years, he has devoted much time in studying the one-stroke writing, (一笔书yì bǐ shū) innovated by Zhang Zhi. While emulating the great masters, Mr Ang has developed his own styles of writing. His kǎi shū (楷书) or regular script, in mini or medium size scripts, is elegant and well composed without any touch-up whatsoever. However, he is better known for his accomplishment in cǎo-shū (草书), in terms of the density, layout and flow of the characters. His style is vigor, fast, graceful and natural. He has devoted much time recently in improving his skills in Chinese brush painting and wood carving, thus keeping himself meaningfully occupied every day.

Prof Tan Siah Kwee: Perfecting the art of beauty in words

A graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Nanyang University, 1972, the quiet and determined Prof Tan is ceaseless in his search for perfecting an art and his Chinese calligraphic skills. To him, gaining mastery of the art of Chinese calligraphy is a lifelong pursuit that requires endless patience and a stillness of heart.
He shares how the art form has benefited him. "After all my years of practising calligraphy, I have been instilled with a great sense of patience. This has helped me maintain my centre of balance no matter what life brings," he enthused.

Currently, the President of the Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore (CCSS), Prof Tan not only founded CCSS, but also served for 37 years as its President. He has continued in his capacity so as to promote his love for calligraphy, which eventually led to Prof Tan embarking on a career of lecturing calligraphy, a mere two years after he graduated. In 1974, he became a Lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, where he spent 12 years. Prof Tan was subsequently appointed a Lecturer of Chinese Calligraphy at the Centre for Chinese Language and Culture, NTU, and at the Department of Chinese Studies, NIE.

Prof Tan has also published over 200 essays on the topic of calligraphy and art, in books, magazines and newspapers. He has won countless awards and honours for his work and gained local and international recognition for his extraordinary calligraphic skills.

He was the first Calligrapher to be nominated by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board (now Singapore Tourism Board) to serve as its cultural ambassador in 1978. Prof Tan has been a judge at numerous art and calligraphic competitions and exhibitions here and overseas since 1975. These include the National Day Art Exhibition and the 3rd China Calligraphy and Seal Carving Television Competition. The latter was organised by the Central China Television (CCTV).

A man of mission, Prof Tan is keen to introduce calligraphy to people of all ages. He established the Singapore Senior Citizen Calligraphy University, as well as introduced children calligraphy classes. It is a dream of his to spread the appreciation of Chinese calligraphy to as many people as he could.

Prof Tan has surely made his mark. He was able to raise a large sum of money to erect the Singapore Calligraphy Centre at Waterloo Street, with the aid of government funding. Today, many local and overseas calligraphers call the centre home. He also collaborated with famous sculptor, Mr Chern Lian Shan, to produce a bronze bust of the late Mr Lee Wee Nam. The masterpiece, emblazoned with Prof Tan's signature calligraphic strokes, is now a prominent centrepiece, at the entrance of the Lee Wee Nam library at NTU. The strokes behold an elegant inscription of the library's new name.

In more ways than one, Prof Tan has contributed to his alma mater. Till this day, Prof Tan remains keenly involved in NTU alumni activities. Just last year, he sat on the Organising Committee as Chairman for the 35th Anniversary Reunion for the Class of 1972 and 30th Anniversary Reunion for the Class of 1977.
